Infarct volume and neurological impairment scores of acute ischemic stroke were significantly improved by 6-CEPN. 6-CEPN was found to inhibit excessive mitochondrial autophagy activation during brain I/R injury, with a concomitant reduction in peroxynitrite production. Specifically, 6-CEPN inhibited the ratio of LC3-II/I and Drp1 expression in the mitochondrial fraction, as well as the protein expression of iNOS and NADPH oxidase subunit p47phox in a dose-dependent manner.
