A method for online diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of an autonomous vehicle sensing system includes detecting, via a sensor, a physical parameter of an object external to the vehicle. The method also includes communicating data indicative of the physical parameter to the electronic controller via the sensor. The method additionally includes comparing data from the sensor to data representing physical parameters generated by the geographic source model. The method also includes comparing results generated by the perception software during analysis of the data from the sensors to the annotations representing the physical parameters from the model of geographic sources. Further, the method includes generating a predictive assessment of ground truth for the physical parameters of the object using the comparison of the sensor data to the geo-source model data and the comparison of the software results to the geo-source model labels. The invention also discloses a system for online evaluation of the vehicle perception system.
